Abraham’s Tent – January 17-24
First Presbyterian Church will be participating again this year in Abraham’s Tent, a group of local congregations providing Columbus House with an overflow sheltering program for ten homeless men living in New Haven. We will open our doors for hospitality, dinner, overnight shelter, and breakfast from the evening of January 17th through the morning of January 24th.
Lots of Volunteers have already signed up but there are still plenty of opportunities to prepare meals, set up the space for our guests, and provide a warm and welcoming community of friends. If you are interested in being a part of this program, please sign up at the Welcome Table or contact Micah Luce. Last year, we had almost 100 volunteers and all were richly rewarded by the experience.
Our guests would especially appreciate the company of you and your family at dinner one night during our week. Please join us as we extend our hospitality to our guests.
Please volunteer and plan to join one or more dinners during our week.

Though First Presbyterian Church has just completed our third year of service with Columbus House’s “Abraham’s Tent,” it wasn’t until recently that I decided to recall the passage from the Old Testament from which the program’s name comes. Genesis 18 presents the story: As Abraham sat at the entrance of his tent in the heatContinue Reading

Companionship is a way of being present with another person in the midst of struggle or suffering. On October 17, volunteers from more than 20 area congregations who anticipate participating in the Abraham’s Tent program this winter will gather at First Presbyterian Church for Companionship Training.
We will explore the way of companionship – our natural capacity for sensitivity and compassion. We will share in the basic practices of companionship – hospitality, sharing the journey side by side, listening and accompaniment. We will learn how to honor our limits and support a person in building a circle of care. We will explore ways to practice the way of companionship in our lives – at home, in our congregation, and in our community.
First Presbyterian Church will host Abraham’s Tent from January 17- January 24, 2012. If you are interested in participating in this year’s program, please plan to attend this training on Monday, October 17, 2011 from 6 – 9 p.m. in the Miller Gathering Hall. Dinner will be served.
Please bring a dessert to share!
