Thanksgiving Special Offering and Volunteer Opportunities

Each year, through our Thanksgiving Special Offering, First Presbyterian Church joins people and institutions around New Haven to help Christian Community Action, the Connecticut Food Bank and Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen provide a season of thanksgiving for those who could not otherwise afford it.

Your thanksgiving special offering will be divided 40%-40%-20% between these organizations. This offering is a major opportunity to give thanks by contributing directly to the well being of our neighbors. Some 113,000 children live in poverty in Connecticut. 32% of New Haven's children live in poverty, mostly concentrated in a few neighborhoods such as the Hill section served by Christian Community Action.

  • CCA - Christian Community Action: is an ecumenical social service organization that expresses faithful witness by providing help, housing and hope to those who are poor in New Haven.
  • DESK – Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen: serves meals to New Haven’s homeless individuals throughout the week, adding an extra special meal for Thanksgiving Day.
  • The Connecticut Food Bank: supports these and many other local efforts by providing food and resources to approximately 600 community-based programs in six of the state’s eight counties: Fairfield, Litchfield, Middlesex, New Haven, New London and Windham.

CCA Food Donations

CCA’s Food Pantry Needs Food!

Canned and dry beans, macaroni and cheese, soups, tuna, peanut butter and jelly are among the items needed.

We collect food items in the wheelbarrow outside the sanctuary each week and deliver it to CCA at the end of each month.

You may also drop food off at the CCA office at 168 Davenport Avenue, New Haven, which is open between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm Monday through Friday for donations.

This food pantry served over 2000 households in 2014. With your contributions, we can serve even more in the coming year.
