Mission Committee Peace and Justice Wednesdays

Date Posted: June 26th, 2011 — 6:50am

We invite everyone to join us in fellowship, scripture, prayer, song, food and learning a bit about a five Peace and Justice personal stories.

Ralph Jones will lead Reducing Gun Violence, Ned and Wanda Castner will lead Health Care for All), Teddy Hogle will lead Changing America’s Policies to Promote Justice for Columbia’s Poor, Alan Hogle will lead Reducing Hunger and Art and Mary Hunt will lead Humane Treatment for Immigrant Prisoners.  We will have guest experts some weeks.

We hope the Wednesday evening gatherings and personal stories will expand our imagination of what is possible for peace and justice activities of First Pres.  We will mostly use resources created by the General Assembly but will also include  items of personal interest.
There will be an introduction each week which may vary slightly but will be generally the same message so those who can only attend one session will hear how we came to plan these gatherings, why peace and justice is important to the Church and the peace and justice work of the General Assembly.

We will gather about 6:15 pm and finish by 7:30 pm

The general format will be:

  • Gather and social time
  • A song or two (probably the same songs each week)
  • Grace
  • Dinner (pot luck but a main course provided)
  • Introduction and background on our Peace and Justice planning with brief explanation of the biblical basis for peace and justice activities and why/how the Church is called to respond to injustice.
  • Scripture Reading related to the peace and justice weekly topic
  • Program (we will strive to make to liturgical based)
    • A brief presentation (about 15 minutes) on one of five topics – Columbia, gun violence, hunger, treatment of immigrant prisoners, health care.
    • A knowledgeable active person from each area will be invited to present and answer questions.
    • Discussion and Q&A
    • A song or two
    • Close

Child care will be provided for children 10 and under.

Study/Action Groups Coming This Summer!

Date Posted: June 12th, 2011 — 7:19pm

Join us and give thought to issues that matter and make some new friends too!

A group of church members who attended a Peace Convocation at Stony Point Conference Center this spring invite you to join one of two covenant study/action groups.

The first will meet around issues of Immigration Reform and the second will learn about the relationship of the Presbyterian Church (Inglesia Presbiteriana de Columbia) has with the IPC Church in the country of Columbia.

We will look at ways for building communities of peace in the midst of the chaos now being experienced in that land, and consider the way of Jesus in a difficult situation.

Our materials will come from the PCUSA,  the Presbyterian Peace Fellowship, Presbyterians for Just Immigration, and other Presbyterian study materials.

Please consider this possibility for the summer and make a short term commitment to join us.  There is information on the Welcome Table or talk directly to Art or Mary Hunt, Bonnie Sherman, Ralph Jones, Dick Hasbany, or Teddy Hogle.
