Eve’s Daughters – March 28

Date Posted: March 5th, 2011 — 8:22am

In February, women from Congregation Mishkan Israel and First Presbyterian Church met to explore the wonder of The Song of Songs, the most romantic poetry in the Bible.

This month we will look at “Disobedience and Redemption: The Women of the Exodus Story.” At the beginning of the Book of Exodus a conspiracy of women sparks the redemption of the Israelites from Egypt: The midwives, Moses’ mother, Yoheved, Miriam, Pharoah’s daughter (named “Batya” – daughter of God – by the Jewish sages), and all of the women who continue to give birth despite Pharoah’s genocidal decrees perform acts of civil disobedience. We will explore their stories over another delicious meal.

We may also ask, where are the acts of disobedience in our lives? How have they, or how might they, give birth to or nurture new things?

Join us on Monday, March 28th from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. in the Miller Gathering Hall at First Presbyterian Church for another exciting interfaith conversation and Bible study. Sign up at the Welcome Table.

Eve’s Daughters – February 28

Date Posted: January 29th, 2011 — 2:03pm

Eve’s Daughters, the women’s Interfaith Bible Study shared with the women of Congregation Mishkan Israel, will be gathering on Monday, February 28, at 6:30 p.m.  The meeting will take place at Congregation Mishkan Israel on Ridge Road in Hamden and begins with a prepared dinner.

The evening’s discussion will be on “Song of Songs: Romance, Passion, and Religion.” The Song of Songs is a passionate, romantic, and erotic poem. What is it doing in the Bible? First century scholar Rabbi Akiva called it the Bible’s “Holy of Holies”. In spite of the lack of explicitly religious content, it has been interpreted as an allegory of the relationship between God and the People of Israel; for Christians, God and the Church or Christ and the human soul. As we study this ancient text we will also explore Jewish and Christian attitudes towards romantic relationships.

Sign up at the Welcome Table and be a part of this dynamic interfaith conversation. Co-Pastor Maria LaSala and Rabbi Alison Adler lead the Bible Study.
