Presbyterians Doing Justice
The words of Micah are ringing in our ears this week:
“God has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Holy One require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”
Presbyterians all over the country are accustomed to working for justice for LGBT people in the church – especially in those years when we’re heading into a General Assembly and we prepare to prayerfully discern the will of God through the voices of the people. What may not be as obvious are the ways Presbyterians are working to do justice on behalf of LGBT people in civil society, 365 days a year.… Continue
We are pleased to introduce our new Youth Group leaders, Anna and Joel Hamaguchi!
Anna and Joel hosted a kickoff lunch on September 30 for youth in grades 6-12 and have many more activities planned for the year.
Welcome Anna and Joel!
Our choir has begun rehearsals for the fall season, and we sang in the worship service for the first time on Sunday, September 16. We have welcomed two new singers into the choir this fall, and we encourage anyone else who has a love of singing and wants to participate in a lively and devoted group to join us. We rehearse on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 and Sunday mornings at 9:30. Choir members who can’t come to the Wednesday rehearsal come for the full rehearsal on Sunday; those who do come to the Wednesday rehearsal come at 10:00 on Sundays.… Continue
In June, Dick Hasbany, Martha Smith and Jessica Walker came out on a very hot day to help prepare the ground and install two garden beds marking a new ‘Children’s Garden’ at FPC. The garden includes both flowers and vegetables and we look forward to working with the Christian Education committee in the coming weeks and months to incorporate aspects of the garden into the children’s activities.
We hope you will see flowers from the garden in the sanctuary or in Miller Gathering Hall. We also hope to share vegetables at fellowship hour and regular potluck luncheons. This garden is meant to be shared so all are welcome to weed, plant & share in its growing.… Continue
The First Presbyterian Church Choir will begin its rehearsals for the fall season on Wednesday, September 5, at 7:00 p.m. We will not have the usual Sunday morning rehearsal next Sunday, September 9, since the Elm City Girls’ Choir will be singing.
But we will rehearse again on September 12, and sing in the worship service for the first time on September 16.
We always welcome new singers! We enjoy learning an eclectic range of music, from Renaissance motets to Bach to spirituals and contemporary music in various styles, and bringing these different voices to our worship services.
As in previous years, we will present our Advent and Christmas music on the Third Sunday of Advent, December 16, and we welcome anyone who would like to sing during this season, even if you cannot commit to being with us for the whole year.… Continue
